Itinerary

Day 1 - UK/Auckland

Your New Zealand holiday starts with a departure from the UK on a scheduled Air New Zealand flight to Auckland via Los Angeles.

Day 2 - In flight.

Day 3 - Auckland

You will be met on arrival at Auckland Airport and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight (1): Auckland - Hotel DeBrett 

Day 4 - Auckland - Matamata - Rotorua ( 227 km)

Depart Auckland and journey through lush farming country, to the rolling, grassy hills of Matamata. Experience the real Middle Earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set, the setting for the "Shire" that featured in Peter Jackson's directed films, the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. During your tour you will see Hobbit Holes, The Green Dragon Inn, The Mill, double arched bridge and other structures and gardens built for the films. Your guide will escort you through the ten acre site recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created. After your tour, continue to the bubbling belly of the North Island, geothermal, tempestuous Rotorua.

Overnight (2) - Rotorua - The Springs

Day 5 - Rotorua

Day free to experience the many sights and activites on offer. Optional sightseeing included Te Puia, New Zealands Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Rainbow Springs Wildlife Park, set in 22 acres of beautiful native trees and streams and home to a huge variety of New Zealand's most precious inhabitants including Kiwi, Kea and Kaka and the Agrodome Sheep Show featuring live sheep shearing, cow milking, lamb feeding and a full New Zealand dog trial.

Day 6 - Rotorua - Tongariro National Park (151km)

Travel from a peaceful eonderland of rivers and lakes to desolate, tortured landscape of volcanic ash where Mt Ngauruhoe is instantly recognisable as Mount Doom and Mt Ruapehu, the embodiment of Mordor.

Overnight (1): Chateau Tongariro Hotel ( Lord of the Rings cast and crew stayed at this hotel )

Day 7 - Tongariro National Park - Wellington (333kms)

Travel via Waitarere Forest, Kapiti Coast and picture yourself in Osgiliath Wookd and Trollshaw Forest. Enjoy the transformation of scenery thrrough Otaki Gorge, reminiscent of the outer reachs of the Shire. You may choose to visit Queen Elizabeth Park, where some of the scenes of the Battle of the Pekennor Fields were filmed, before arriving in Wellington, base for Peter Jackson's film studios and the Weta Workshop.

Overnight (2) - Wellington - Booklovers Bed and Breakfast

Day 8 - Wellington

Today enjoy a wonderful half day film locations experience with your own expert guide in a small group to the filming locations for Rivendell, the Anduin River, Amon Hen, the Gardens of Isengard, "Get of the Road" and Helms Deep amongst others.

Day 9 - Wellington - Picton - Nelson (130 kms)

This morning drop off your rental car and take the Interislander Ferry across the Cook Strait from the dynamic, hilly cityscape of Wellington to the pretty town of Picton. Collect another rental car in Picton and drive to Richmond, Nelson. Nelson is home to Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmith, designers of the One Ring and where one of the original rings is on display.

Overnight (2) - Nelson - Kershaw House

Day 10 - Nelson

Day of leisure in Nelson. Why not take an optional Mt Olympus Helicopter tour. Mt Olympus is a remote location and can only be reached by helicopter, it sprouts pinnacle rock formations were used to portray the rugged country "South of Rivendell"

Day 11 - Nelson - Hokitika (340kms)

The road south is breathtaking with white capped breakers and rugged rocks on one side, bush-clad mouintains on the other. Travel via Punakaiki, famous for its pancake rock formations which date back about 30 million years. Enroute, why not stop at the Gloworm caves at Charleston.

Overnight (1) - Hokitika - Rimu Lodge

Day 12 - Hokitika - Fox Glacier (157kms) 

Continue on down the West Coast home to the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, unique relics of the last ice age. Mighty rivers of solid white, tumbling down ice-hewn rock valleys, they are classically beautiful in the glacial sense, Nowwhere else in the world have glaciers advanced so close to the sea at this latitude.

Overnight (1) - Fox Glacier - Misty Peaks

Day 13 - Fox Glacier - Wanaka (262kms)

Enjoy waterfalls and beautiful scenic rivers and lakes as you head towards the lakeside town of Wanaka.

Overnight (2) - Wanaka Springs Lodge

Day 14 - Wanaka

Today's half day wilderness jet boating adventure is set amongs stunning scenery. Travel past towering mountains, waterfalls and Lord of the Rings film locations on this pristine, glacier fed river.

Day 15 - Wanaka - Queenstown (115kms)

Journey south over the Clutha and Cardrona Rivers and via Lake Dunstan to Cromwell. Continue through the Kawarau Gorge before arriving at New Zealand's adventure capital, Queenstown,. An alternative route today is via the Crowne Range Road which is New Zealand's highest sealed highway. This route is shorter that the one via Cromwell however travel time may take longer due to the winding nature of the road. ( Note this route is not reccomended over winter)

Overnights (2) - Queenstown - Browns Boutique Hotel

Day 16 - Queenstown

Today enjoy a half day off road adventure with exciting Lord of the Rings film locations. The 4WD Tour takes you into the heart of New Zealand's high country - the embodiment of the Middle Earth of Tolkeins imagination. Enjoy a spectacular look at the diversity of the scenery in the area. Based around several of the specific sites where filming took place.

Day 17 - Queenstown - Lake Tekapo (256 kms)

Another scenic journey to the settlement of Lake Tekapo. The opaque turquoise colour of this lake and others in the area is caused by fine, glacier-ground rock particles held in suspension.

Overnight (1) - Lake Tekapo - Tekapo Heights

Day 18 - Lake Tekapo - Christchurch (227kms)

Time is available this morning to explore Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak located in the heart of New Zealands most spectacular mountain region, the Southern Alps. One of the most spectacular features of this area is the Tasman Glacier which is 30kms long. Also well worth seeing is the Hochstetter Ice Fall. There are a wide variety of walking trips available where mountain and glacier scenery are at their best.

Overnight (2) - Christchurch - The Classic Villa

Day 19 - Christchurch

Today's tour takes you to remote and beautiful Mt Potts high country station where its peaceful mountain was transformed into Edoras, the capital city of the Rohan. 

Day 20 - Christchurch - London 

With most flights departing in the evening enjoy Christchurch. Perhaps take a tram sightseeing ride around the city or visit the beautiful Botanic Gardens. Return your hire car to the airport and check in for your flight to Auckland, where you will connect with a Air New Zealand flight via Auckland and Los Angeles back to the UK. 

Day 21 - Arrive UK 

Why not extend your holiday with a stopover in Los Angeles? This can be included as part of your outward or return journey (or both) and for many the journey thus becomes part of the holiday.
