TranzAlpine Train

The TranzAlpine Train

Many of our holidays include one of the world’s most famed train journeys - The TranzAlpine Train that operates a daily return trip on the South Island from Christchurch to Greymouth.

The train crosses the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, with thrilling vistas over deep gorges as it travels alongside the Waimakariri River. It traverses the mighty Southern Alps with spectacular views of the dramatic alpine landscape.

Arthur's Pass, roughly half way into the journey, offers a great opportunity to get off the TranzAlpine train and stretch your legs. After a short stop the train continues to the west coast and the riverside town of Greymouth.

This riverside town has a proud history dating from gold rush days of the 1860s. You can enjoy the local beer brewed at Montieth’s traditional Brewery, or find Greenstone jewellery being shaped at numerous galleries throughout the town.

I really enjoyed my ride on the train, so much that we included it into our tours. My top 3 are below:-
