Wildlife
Besides having spectacular scenery New Zealand is predator free and has a rich variety of bird life. These include Bell birds, Brown Teal, Stitchbird, Little Spotted Kiwi, North Island Kaka, North Island Robin, Saddleback, Scaup, Tui, Weka, takahe, kakariki, Kokako, whitehead, New Zealand wood pigeons, the great Albatross (Wandering and Royal), mollymawks, petrels, cape pigeons, shearwater, skua terns, gulls, shags, blue penguins, yellow-eyed penguins and fiordland crested penguins, Other river birds include the royal spoonbill, the little shag, great white egret, Kotuku or white heron, fernbird bittern, little shags and migratory waders. New Zealand is also home to whales, fur seals and bottlenose dolphins. |
