Guide to West Coast - New Zealand Holidays

Snow-capped mountains and glaciers, lakes and rivers, forests and grasslands together with over 600 kms of coastline are all to be found in this region. This stunning natural environment provides ample opportunity for leisure activities including glacier walks, white-water rafting, horse trekking, kayaking, mountain biking and exploring historic sites. The region is also famed as the principal source of Greenstone, known as New Zealand jade, the rock being fashioned into unique items of jewellery and artwork.

Franz Josef Glacier

 

Descending to about 1000 feet (300 metres) above sea level, Franz Josef Glacier is unusual in that it is continuing to advance at a rapid rate.



Greymouth

 

Greymouth is the largest town, and commercial centre, of the West Coast region.



Haast

 

Haast is are surrounded by a landscape of rainforest, wetlands, sand dunes and surf-pounded shingle beaches. This wilderness forms part of the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, so designated because South Westland and Fiordland have some of the most dramatic forest and mountain scenery and natural resources in the world. Haast township is actually three separate communities forming o­ne town. There is Haast Junction o­n the highway, where you will see the prominent World Heritage visitor centre. Just 2 km east is Haast township with a supermarket, café, and places to stay. A further 2 km along the road is the tiny settlement of Haast Beach.


Punakaiki

 

Dramatic seascapes along the Punakaiki Coast culminate in the amazing stacks of giant pancake rock formations and booming blowholes.

Punakaiki is sited at the mouth of the Punakaiki River, 40 km north of Greymouth, o­n the West Coast. This small settlement is well set up for visitors with an information centre, tearooms, tavern, motels, lodges and a motor camp.

The Dolomite Point lookout above the famous pancake rocks, is a short walk from the road o­n a paved loop track. You will hear the booming surf long before you set eyes o­n the slender towers that have been weathered to resemble a huge stack of pancakes. These strange formations are caused by a chemical process. Long ago layers of lime-rich mud were deposited o­n the seabed and then overlayed by weaker sheets of soft mud and clay. The seabed was tilted and raised to form coastal cliffs, and wind and water have etched out the soft layers to produce the stark relief of stratified formations. The blowholes are the result of massive undermining of these weird structures by wave action. High seas surge into caverns, causing enough pressure to propel impressive geysers of spume and spray up through clefts in the rock.


Fox Glacier

  As you work your way by car or coach from Greymouth down the dramatic Tasman Coast, Fox Glacier is the second of two visible from the road o­n your left hand side. The first you pass being Franz Josef Glacier. Both are among the most accessible in the world! For many of us the opportunity to walk o­n a glacier will not come round often and there are several options here to maximise that opportunity.



Hokitika

  Hokitika is the gateway to New Zealand's Westland Heritage National Park, situated south of Greymouth o­n the Tasman coast about two hours drive from the West Coast Glaciers of Fox and Franz Josef. Nearby is Shantytown, a former gold mining site recreated in 1971 as a replica of an 1880s West Coast gold rush town.
